If you're coming from San José, a popular option is to combine driving with a short ferry crossing. It's about a 2-hour drive from San José to the ferry dock in Puntarenas, where you'll board the ferry to Paquera on the Nicoya Peninsula.
The ferry crossing itself is roughly an hour to an hour and 15 minutes across the gulf — a beautiful, scenic ride where you can get out of the car and enjoy the views. After the ferry, it's approximately an hour and a half drive to The Baya House in Santa Teresa. You can bring a rental car on board or cross as a walk-on passenger.
While it's still partly a drive, the ferry cuts out the long route around the peninsula and turns the trip into a much more relaxed (and scenic) journey. Ferry tickets must be purchased in advance — you can buy them online at navieratambor.com. Ferries run several times a day, but spots fill up quickly in high season, so we recommend booking ahead.
For guests renting a car
If you prefer to drive the whole way, you can go directly to Santa Teresa. The journey takes approximately 6 hours from San José or 4.5 hours from Liberia. You can also combine driving with the ferry crossing from Puntarenas — see the option above.
The drive is scenic, and the main routes into Santa Teresa are paved. Once you arrive in Santa Teresa, The Baya House is located directly on the main road, so there are no steep mountain or hillside roads required to reach the property.
